Generals’ Smith is OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Hunter Smith of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Week with seven points including one goal and six assists along with a plus-minus rating of plus-4 in two games played during the first week of OHL Playoff action ending March 23.

Oshawa - March 24, 2014 - Media Release

Hunter "Big Rig" Smith led the OHL in scoring last week helping the first place Generals open the 2014 OHL Eastern Conference Playoffs with a pair of victories over the eighth place Mississauga Steelheads.

On Friday night in Game 1 of the series, Smith had the best offensive game of his career with five points including a goal and four assists as second star of a 6-0 win over the Steelheads. Then on Sunday night in Game 2, Smith helped the Generals erase a 2-0 deficit with a pair of assists earning third star honours in the 3-2 overtime victory.

Smith, an 18-year-old from Windsor, ON, is playing in his third OHL season and second with the Generals. With 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 64 regular season games, Smith was recognized as the third Most Improved Player this season in the league’s Eastern Conference Coaches Poll announced last week.

Also considered for the award this week was San Jose Sharks prospect Chris Tierney who had five points including two goals and three assists in two playoff wins for the London Knights, and Vancouver Canucks prospect Dane Fox who had four points including three goals and one assist in two playoff wins for the Erie Otters. In goal, Justin Nichols of the Guelph Storm won both starts against the Plymouth Whalers posting one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .961.
