The Edmonton Oil Kings started their five game road swing in style, earning a come from behind 4-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen in Sunday night WHL action. Curtis Lazar scored the eventual game-winner midway through the period two and defenceman Cody Corbett continued his strong season, picking up two more assists in the win.
Edmonton - November 3, 2013 - The Edmonton Oil Kings got their longest road trip of the season off to exactly the start they wanted.
The Oil Kings (9-7-0-1) erased a 2-1 deficit with three straight goals en route to a 4-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen (10-4-1-2) Sunday afternoon in Calgary.
There’s ebbs and flows to the game. We scored a big PP goal and a nice 4-on-4 goal to take over the game,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “In the third period we sort of took control of the game and had a great penalty kill to keep the lead. We did the little things we had to do to win on the road.”
Edgars Kulda opened the scoring for the Oil Kings 4:48 into the first period, banging in a shot from a tight angle for his fourth of the season.
But the Hitmen answered with a pair of power-play goals from Jaynen Rissling and Zane Jones to leave the first period with a 2-1 lead.
However, from then on it was all Oil Kings as Reid Petryk and Curtis Lazar scored in the second period to give Edmonton the lead for good. Brett Pollock added an insurance goal in the third period to account for the scoring.
“I thought it looked like we hadn’t played in a week a little bit in the first period. I thought we settled in, we didn’t give up a lot of shots in the second and third and we did a really good job of just playing our game,” Laxdal said.
The Oil Kings finished with a 31-16 advantage on the shot clock as they dominated the puck for much of the game, while Tristan Jarry made 14 saves to get the win for the Oil Kings.
Edmonton’s power play finished 1-7 while the Hitmen were 2-8.
Cody Corbett finished with a pair of assists in his first game since Oct. 11, while Dysin Mayo also picked up a helper in his first game off the injured list. Henrik Samuelsson extended his point streak to six games with an assist on Lazar’s goal.
Edmonton will continue its road trip Tuesday night when they visit the Vancouver Giants.
