Portland - October 26, 2013 - The Portland Winterhawks (10-3-0-1) won their seventh straight game with a 6-3 win Friday in Cranbrook, British Columbia over the Kootenay Ice (6-6-2-0).

Portland wasted no time getting on the board as just a minute into the game Nic Petan put the Hawks on the board with his ninth of the season.

Chase De Leo then made it 2-0 Hawks at the 4:30 mark, and later in the frame it turned into a 3-0 lead on De Leo's second of the period. Kootenay got one back late in the first on a power play goal by Sam Reinhart to make it 3-1 going into the second.

After a scoreless second period, the Ice got within one 3:52 into the third on a goal by Austin Vetterl to cut the lead to 3-2. Portland responded minutes later with two goals in a span of 31 seconds, first on a power play goal from Derrick Pouliot, then the first of the season from defenseman Josh Hanson as the Hawks took a 5-2 lead.

Midway through the frame Kootenay’s Zak Zborosky brought the Ice within two at 5-3, but the Hawks again snuffed out a potential rally when Keegan Iverson scored just 43 seconds later to push the lead back to three at 6-3. That rounded out the scoring as the Hawks won their seventh straight.

Oliver Bjorkstrand had a big night with four assists, while De Leo, Petan and Brendan Leipsic all finished with two points.

Portland goaltender Jarrod Schamerhorn earned his first career WHL victory with 27 saves on 30 shots. Kootenay goaltender Mackenzie Skapski took the loss with six goals allowed on 38 shots.

Both teams were 1-3 on the power play.

The Hawks conclude their five-game road trip tomorrow in Spokane when they take on the Chiefs. They’re back on home ice Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they take on the Brandon Wheat Kings at the Moda Center.
