Sautner scores twice, as Oil Kings thump the Regina Pats
The Edmonton Oil Kings made it two for two on their current eight game road trip, pounding the Regina Pats 7-2 in Friday night WHL action. Oil Kings defenceman Ashton Sautner led the way on the score sheet, posting his first two goal game of his career and second three point night of the season. Edmonton - October 25, 2013 - The first meeting between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Regina Pats this season ended with the Pats handing the Oil Kings an embarrassing 6-0 loss at Rexall Place. Friday night in Regina, the Oil Kings turned the tables. Ashton Sautner scored twice and had three points as the Oil Kings (8-6-0-1) scored five second-period goals en route to a 7-2 win over the Pats (7-7-0-0) to pick up their third straight win and move into third place in the WHL Eastern Conference. “We had a good start to the game. Obviously getting that first road goal gave us a lot of momentum,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “This is a big road win for us.” Reid Petryk got the Oil Kings on the board early, notching his second goal of the season just 1:38 into the game. Six minutes later, Henrik Samuelsson notched his seventh of the season on a redirection of a Luke Bertolucci pass. In the second period, the Oil Kings exploded, with Sautner scoring twice 0:55 and 6:15 into the frame. Lane Bauer scored his first WHL goal and point as Brett Pollock sprung him for a breakaway and he slipped a backhand five-hole on Regina Netminder Mac Engel. Curtis Lazar scored his 10th of the season on a breakaway of his own, getting Engel down and beating him glove-side, and Brett Pollock wrapped up the scoring parade with a top-corner snipe on the power play. “In the second period, guys got rewarded for their hard work,” Laxdal said. “We just had a lot of good habits and kept on pushing forward. Guys are getting a little confidence in their game. Confident hockey players can be scary and it’s exactly what we wanted to build.” Dyson Stevenson snapped the shutout with a power play marker for the Pats 1:19 into the third period, and Chandler Stephenson added another with a shorthanded marker late in the third. Tristan Jarry made 27 saves to get the win for the Oil Kings, his fourth in a row. Sautner, Samuelsson, Irving, Pollock, Lazar and Petryk all finished with multi-point games for Edmonton, who went 2-7 on the power-play, but it was Sautner’s play that stood out, earning him the first star. The 19-year-old blueliner from Flaxcombe, SK has been asked to carry a heavy load in recent games with Cody Corbett, Dysin Mayo and Griffin Reinhart all missing games. “I thought Sauts has really stepped up, especially in the last three or four games with the guys being out of the lineup,” Laxdal said. “He’s trying to improve as a player and build some confidence, and he’s got to continue to push himself and play the way he’s playing right now.” The Oil Kings will be back in action Saturday when they wrap up their three-game Saskatchewan swing in Swift Current. NOTES: Cody Corbett, Dysin Mayo, Brandon Ralph and Mitchell Walter were scratched for the Oil Kings. … Brandon Baddock picked up his first point of the season with a helper on the opening goal. … Petryk wound up with a Gordie Howe hat trick on the night after a third-period fight with Braden Christoffer . … Petryk and defenceman Griffin Reinhart extended their scoring streaks to five games, while Henrik Samuelsson and Aaron Irving each have points in their past four.
