Samuelsson pots OT winner, Oil Kings sneak past Kootenay
Henrik Samuelsson scored just 41 seconds into to overtime, leading the Edmonton Oil Kings to a come from behind 3-2 victory over the visiting Kootenay Icein Sunday night WHL action. Samuelsson's heroics helped Edmonton salvage their weekend set with Kootenay, following a 4-3 loss to the Ice in Saturday's opener. Mitch Moroz continued to stay hot for the Oil Kings, scoring his twelfth goal on the season.

Edmonton - October 21, 2013 - At the end of a long weekend for the Edmonton Oil Kings, Henrik Samuelsson sent them off on a winning note.

Samuelsson grabbed a rebound by the side of the net, waited out Kootenay Ice goalie Mackenzie Skapski, then put the puck under Skapski’s arm for the overtime winner as Edmonton (6-6-0-1) downed the Ice (6-6-1-0) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Rexall Place.

“It wasn’t personally my best game, but it was great to finish it off there,” Samuelsson said. “We got four out of six points (this weekend) and we’ve got some momentum now going into our road trips.”

It was Edmonton’s last home game until November 14 as they clear out of Rexall to make room for the Canadian Finals Rodeo, and wrapped up the Oil Kings’ first three-games-in-three-days weekend of the season with a 2-1-0-0 record.

“Today’s a typical three-in-three-nights game for both teams,” said Edmonton Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “Both teams were trying to generate a lot of energy and it just kind of went back and forth a little bit. You can see our team is really tired tonight. I think Kootenay was a little tired.”

The scoring opened on a weird play midway through the first period as Rinat Valiev attempted to clear the puck for Kootenay but wound up putting it through the five-hole on Skapski for the game’s first goal. Credit went to Mitch Moroz of the Oil Kings, extending his point streak to 11 games and his goal streak to five.

“It’s got to be my best goal ever I’d say,” Moroz joked. “I don’t even have to touch the puck right now. It’s just going in from everywhere I guess.”

Kootenay tied it up late in the frame on a goal by Collin Shirley, and took the lead in the second courtesy of Luke Philp.

Aaron Irving made it 2-2 late in the second with a power-play goal from a sharp angle for his second of the season.

Tristan Jarry made 25 saves for the win for Edmonton.

The Oil Kings are back in action Wednesday when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors.
