Lazar lifts Oil Kings to easy win over Rebels
On the strength of a four point effort from Curtis Lazar and 21 save shutout performance from netminder Tristan Jarry, the Edmonton Oil Kings had little trouble in dumping the Red Deer Rebels by a score of 4-0. Lazar continues to show why the Ottawa Senators were wise to use their 1st round pick on the talented 18 year old, who has put up 15 pts in 7 games since returning from the Sens training camp.

Edmonton - October 19, 2013 - At home or on the road, the Edmonton Oil Kings continue to be dominant in their new black and green uniforms.

The Oil Kings (5-5-0-1) improved to 3-0-0-0 in their new duds and got back to .500 overall on the season Friday night with a 4-0 win in Red Deer over the Rebels (6-6-0-0) .

The Oil Kings have now outscored their opponents 15-4 in the three games they’ve worn their new jerseys, introduced at the home opener this year and were in control for most of the game, outshooting the Rebels 45-21.

They’ve also picked up points in their last three games (2-0-0-1) after a slow start to the season.

“I think that we’re starting to find our way a little bit here. I thought we played very well last week. We’re starting to see some consistency in our game from start to finish,” said Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal.

“It’s like our motto, ‘Build.’ We want to get better every day, and the consistent thing we like is we haven’t been giving up a lot of shots against. We have to play a team game, and when we do that, I feel we can compete every night for a win.”

Curtis Lazar notched two goals and two assists to lead the Oil King offence and has points in all seven games he’s played this season. With eight goals and seven assists on the season, Lazar is now tied for 16th in WHL scoring despite missing the first four games of the season.

“Curtis is really finding his stride, and Curtis is also auditioning for Brent Sutter and the world juniors, and no better way to do that than a four point night in his building,” Laxdal said.

Tristan Jarry picked up his fifth win of the season and first shutout making 21 saves. After a rocky start to 2013-14, Jarry now has a 1.83 goals-against average and .924 save percentage over seven games in October.

“I thought in the second period, Jarry was excellent. He made a couple of saves that really kept us in the period,” Laxdal said. “I think it’s a combination of the team game and counting on him when we need him to be there. I thought they got a couple of looks that were Grade A scoring chances, and he was there to stop them.”

Mitch Moroz opened the scoring for the Oil Kings 3:19 into the first period, unleashing a wicked one-timer from the slot that beat Red Deer goalie Patrik Bartosak. It was Moroz’s team-leading 10th goal of the season and extended the power forward’s scoring streak to nine games.

Griffin Reinhart made it a 2-0 lead before the end of the first period with his first goal of the season, banking a point shot off the goal post and in on a power play.

Lazar rounded out the scoring with both of his goals coming 50 seconds apart in the third period.

Rookie defenceman Jesse Mills notched his first WHL point with an assist on Lazar’s first goal.

Edmonton will be back in action Saturday night when they host the Kootenay Ice at Rexall Place. Every fan in attendance will have a chance to win one of 500 Oil Kings branded lunch bags on giveaway night.
