Trombley steals the show, leading Blades to comeback win over Kootenay
Collin Valcourt scored the third period game-winner, giving the Saskatoon Blades a huge come from behind, 4-2 win over the Kootenay Ice in Friday night NHL action. Saskatoon - October 19, 2013 - The Saskatoon Blades picked up a huge come from behind, 4-2 win over the Kootenay Ice on Friday night.

The win was made possible thanks to Saskatoon scoring three unanswered goals in the third period in Cranbrook, with Collin Valcourt scoring the winner with under 7 minutes to play.

It was a bit of a back and forth opening period from Cranbrook between the Ice and Blades.

The two teams had a fairly substantial feeling-out period, with few chances in the first several minutes. The best early chance in the game went to Kootenay when a 2 on 1 feed from Sam Reinhart just missed the stick of Landon Peel, who couldn't get a stick on it with Blades goalie Troy Trombley sliding across to attempt the save.

Saskatoon had their own good chance about 3 minutes later when the 4th line created a chance. It came after a battle in the corner as the puck ended up on the tape of Austin Calladine. His pass from the corner to the front of the net just missed the stick of Logan Harland as he couldn't get tip it past Wyatt Hoflin.

After those chances, the Blades finally capitalized on one. It came when Matt Revel won an offensive zone faceoff to Nelson Nogier, who fired the puck on net. Winger Cory Millette was on the doorstep, and slid the puck home to make it 1-0 at 15:25. The 2nd of the season for Millette was the only scoring of the period as Kootenay held a 9-7 shot advantage in the frame. The Blades were 1 for 1 on the PK in the period, without getting a chance to have their own PP.

The Kootenay Ice came out like a different team in the second period. After some early pressure they made their chances count at 5:18 when defender Jeff Hubic pinched in from the point after a pair of chances, shooting and scoring to make it a 1-1 game. Austin Vetterl then gave the Ice the lead at 10:53 following a pair of close Blades chances. Saskatoon couldn't make theirs count, just missing a tap-in before the Ice went the other way with Vetterl picking up the puck, taking it on the rush, cutting through the slot and seeing his shot beat Trombley past his right arm to make it a 2-1 game. Saskatoon picked up momentum late in the period, including generating a trio of chances after a forced turnover by Collin Valcourt, but Hoflin kept the puck out. The shots were 21-18 Ice through 40 minutes and 12-11 in the period for Kootenay.

After Kootenay came out hard in the second, it was the Blades chance to return the favour in the third period. The Blades tied the game up at two at 3:56 of the frame when Nick Zajac tallied his 3rd of the season and the Blades 2nd shorthanded goal of the season as he ripped home a shot off the arm of Hoflin in on the 2 on 1 rush. Saskatoon then took the lead at 13:48 when Nikita Scherbak was in on the rush, pulled up and hit Collin Valcourt who joined the rush late. The big forward for Saskatoon took the feed from Scherbak and ripped his wrister home high past Hoflin for a 3-2 Blades lead at 13:48. After Clayton Kirichenko took a late checking from behind penalty, the Ice pulled Hoflin for the extra attacker but couldn't score despite furious pressure. The puck was cleared out of the zone by Nathan Burns right as Kirichenko jumped out of the box and the defenceman walked in and hit the empty cage for his second career goal and second in as many nights to ice the Blades 4-2 victory.

Lost in the shuffle of the big comeback win was the fact that Blades goalie Troy Trombley made 38 saves to pick up his second win of the season. He took home first star honours for his performance. On special teams, Saskatoon was 0 for 3 on the PP and 2 for 2 on the PK.
