Oil Kings pull off come from behind win on Kristians Pelss Night
On a night when they honoured the life of teammate and friend Kristians Pelss, it was only fitting the Edmonton Oil Kings pull off a victory. Henrik Samuelsson’s snap shot from the right face-off dot snuck through Medicine Hat goalie Marek Langhamer with 3:37 to play as the Oil Kings came back from a 3-2 deficit in the third period to down the Tigers 4-3 Friday night at Rexall Place.

Edmonton - September 28, 2013 - On a night when they honoured the life of teammate and friend Kristians Pelss, it was only fitting the Edmonton Oil Kings pull off a victory.

Henrik Samuelsson’s snap shot from the right face-off dot snuck through Medicine Hat goalie Marek Langhamer with 3:37 to play as the Oil Kings (2-1-0-0) came back from a 3-2 deficit in the third period to down the Tigers (2-1-0-0) 4-3 Friday night at Rexall Place.

The game began with an emotional pregame ceremony honouring Pelss, the former Oil King and Edmonton Oilers draft pick who died tragically in his home country of Latvia this summer. Oil Kings players wore Pelss’ number 26 jersey for warm-ups, with those jerseys being auctioned off in support of the Oil Kings Education Association.

When the puck dropped, Samuelsson got the Oil Kings on the board with a power-play tally 8:44 into the game, his second goal of the season. Medicine Hat responded with goals from Cole Sanford and Curtis Valk before Cody Corbett tied it with his third goal of the year early in the second period.

Tyler Lewington sent the Tigers into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead, but it was Corbett again 5:38 into the final frame tying the game and setting the stage for Samuelsson’s heroics.

Both Corbett and Samuelsson finished the night with three points to pace the Edmonton offence, and Tristan Jarry made 33 saves to get the win in net.

NOTES
Garan Magnes made his WHL debut for the Oil Kings. Originally listed by Edmonton, Magnes was signed in training camp this season. The 16-year-old forward is a SSAC product in Edmonton. … Andrew Koep, Mads Eller and Brandon Ralph were scratched for Edmonton.
