Edmonton - September 26, 2013 - In their home opener, the Edmonton Oil Kings power play did in the Calgary Hitmen. Wednesday night against the Regina Pats, it was the Oil Kings’ worst enemy.

Edmonton (1-1-0-0) went 0-7 while a man up, allowed a pair of second-period short-handed goals and struggled all night to generate offence as they fell 6-0 to the Pats (1-2-0-0) at Rexall Place.

Carson Samoridny got the scoring started for Regina just 43 seconds into the game as he beat Tristan Jarry high on the blocker side.

The score stayed that way until early in the second period when, with the Oil Kings on a 5-on-3 power play, an errant pass found Regina defenceman Dmitry Sinitsyn just as he left the penalty box. Sinitsyn buried the chance to give Regina a 2-goal lead. Marc McCoy scored just 1:54 later, Dyson Stephenson added another shorthanded goal midway through the period and Morgan Klimchuk capped the scoring frenzy as the Pats reeled off four second-period goals.

Klimchuk added another goal in the third period to finish with a three point night.

The loss stands as the most lopsided for the Oil Kings on home ice since October 15, 2010 when they lost 7-1 to the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Regina goalie Dawson McAuley made 34 saves to pick up the shutout.

Tristan Jarry stopped 13 of 18 shots he faced in the Edmonton net before being relieved for the third period by Tyler Santos. In his first WHL game, Santos stopped 10 of 11 shots.

Oil Kings scratches were Andrew Koep (lower body), Brandon Ralph (healthy), Griffin Reinhart (NHL camp) and Curtis Lazar (NHL camp). … 16-year-old defenceman Jesse Mills and 19-year-old goalie Tyler Santos played their first career WHL games. … Mads Eller took a nasty spill into the boards in the third period, knocking himself out on the ice. The 18-year-old Danish forward was able to leave the ice on his own power after an extended period on the ice, but will likely be out for Friday’s game said Edmonton Head Coach Derek Laxdal.
