Battalion hand Rangers 4-1 loss
The North Bay Battalion defeated the Kitchener Rangers 4-1 in exhibition action on Sunday afternoon. Josh Sterk scored for the Rangers, while first-year netminder Matthew Greenfield made 50 saves in his first preseason start.

Temiscaming - September 7, 2013 - The North Bay Battalion defeated the Kitchener Rangers 4-1 in exhibition action on Sunday afternoon. Josh Sterk scored for the Rangers, while first-year netminder Matthew Greenfield made 50 saves in his first preseason start.

The Battalion scored a pair of quick goals to jump ahead 2-0 in the first period. Calvin Gomes opened the scoring, punching a solo effort past Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield. Swiss import Vincent Praplan added Brampton's second goal less than a minute later.

Kitchener out-shot the Battalion 18-15 in the opening period.

Third year forward Josh Sterk put the Rangers on the board with less than five minutes to play in the middle frame, lifting a backhand shot past North Bay netminder Brendan O'Neill. His second goal in as many games cut the Battalion lead to 2-1.

The Battalion regained their two-goal advantage before the end of the frame. Jamie Lewis slid a shot between Greenfield's pads for his first of the preseason, putting North Bay ahead 3-1 headed into the second intermission.

North Bay led shots on goal 15-11 in the period.

Lewis scored his second of the game late, firing into an empty Rangers net to secure a 4-1 Battalion win.

North Bay continued to out-shoot the Rangers by a 23-12 margin in the third, finishing with a 53- 41 overall advantage. The two teams split their home-and-home exhibition series with one win apiece.

The Rangers return to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Friday, September 13 at 7:30pm when they host the Erie Otters in exhibition play.
