Sault Ste. Marie - September 4, 2013 - Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice-President and GM Ray Shero announced earlier today that they have agreed to terms with Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds goaltender Matt Murray.

Murray, who was originally drafted by the Penguins in the 3rd Round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, inked a three-year entry level contract.

“I’m thrilled to sign my first pro contract with the Penguins' organization. It is a day I will never forget, and a dream come true” stated Murray when reached via phone this afternoon.

A native of Thunder Bay, ON, Murray is poised to begin his 4th season with the Hounds. The 19-year old is coming off a banner season in 2012-13 where he recorded career best marks in wins, saves, GAA and SV% while backstopping the club in an impressive six-game playoff series with Owen Sound.

"Matthew has not always had an easy road here with our Program, from the acquisition of Jack Campbell which cost him games as a 17 year old, through some porous defensive play at times over his entire tenure with us. Through all of those challenges Matt has always persevered and continued to develop and evolve as a student and hockey player” began Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas.

A student-athlete with The Program, Matt is presently enrolled at Algoma University in the area of Business Administration. He is entering his 2nd year of post-secondary studies after graduating from secondary school with honours during his first two seasons with the Greyhounds.

“Matthew has always been one of our top students, and his resilience in the face of on-ice challenges is something that is truly admirable and would have likely made people of lesser character look for a way to get out. To see him sign today is truly a great moment” concluded Dubas.

Murray departed Sault Ste. Marie earlier this week for London, ON where the Penguins will take part in a three-game rookie tournament with games versus Ottawa, Toronto and Chicago.

Pens schedule...

Thursday, September 5, 2013
2 p.m. vs Ottawa

Saturday, September 7, 2013
7 pm. Vs Toronto

Sunday, September 8, 2013
2 p.m. vs Chicago

Matt becomes the fourth member of The Program to sign an NHL contract since July 29, 2013 joining graduating Captain Colin Miller, current captain Darnell Nurse, and left winger Sergey Tolchinsky.
