Delnov pots hat trick in T-Birds shootout victory
Alexander Delnov scored three goals and Mathew Barzal and Shea Theodore scored in the shootout Saturday afternoon to give the Seattle Thunderbirds a 6-5 shootout win over the Victoria Royals at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament.

Seattle - September 1, 2013 - Alexander Delnov scored three goals and Mathew Barzal and Shea Theodore scored in the shootout Saturday afternoon to give the Seattle Thunderbirds a 6-5 shootout win over the Victoria Royals at the Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament.

The T-Birds finish out the Everett preseason tournament on Sunday against the Spokane Chiefs at 3:00pm.

The T-Birds came back from three two-goal deficits in the game to force overtime and then the shootout.

T-Birds goalie Devon Fordyce stopped 51 of 56 shots in the win.

Delnov was the first shooter for Seattle. Victoria goalie Coleman Vollrath stopped him with a right pad save. Logan Nelson shot first for the Royals and Fordyce denied him.

Barzal was the second shooter for the T-Birds. He came down on Vollrath and beat the goalie over the glove with a wrist shot. Ben Walker was up second for Victoria and he beat Fordyce with a hard shot over the glove.

Riley Sheen shot third for the T-Birds and Vollrath made the save. Fordyce stoned Trent Lofthouse, Victoria’s third shooter, to send the shootout to sudden death.

Shea Theodore was the fourth Seattle shooter and he beat Vollrath with a low backhand shot over the left pad. Fordyce stopped Matthew Phillips with a blocker save to get the T-Birds the win.

Victoria (0-2-0-0) took a 1-0 lead when Nelson scored at 15:55 of the first period. Landon Welykholowa and Joe Hicketts had the assists.

Seattle (2-0-0-0) tied the game 1-1 on a power-play goal from Delnov at 17:56 of the first. Riley Sheen carried the puck out from behind the Victoria net on the right side. He sent the puck to Delnov along the boards. Delnov moved the puck to Ethan Bear at the right point. Bear passed it back to Delnov, who skated into the right circle and put a low shot on goal. Delnov’s shot went under Vollrath’s left leg for the tying goal.

Victoria outshot Seattle 12-11 in the first period.

The Royals took a 2-1 lead at 1:21 of the second period on a goal from Phillips. Keegan Kanzig and Hicketts had the assists.

Victoria extended their lead to 3-1 at 7:38 of the second when Luke Harrison scored. Logan Fisher and Kanzig were credited with the assists.

The T-Birds cut the Royals leads to one goal at the eight-minute mark of the second. Off a faceoff Lane Pederson got the puck to Evan Wardley inside the blue line at center ice. Wardley put a slap shot on goal that Vollrath stopped. Kaden Elder got the rebound, moved to his left and slid the puck under a lunging Vollrath.

Victoria outshot Seattle 26-8 in the second period and led 38-19 after two periods.

Austin Carroll scored a power-play goal 29 seconds into the third period to give the Royals a 4-2 lead. Jordan Fransoo and Walker had the assists.

Delnov’s second goal of the night, at 1:48 of the third, cut the Royals lead back to one goal. Connor Honey got the puck to Delnov in the neutral zone to create a two-on-one break with Mitch Elliot. At the top of the right circle Delnov cut to the slot and beat Vollrath with a hard, low wrist shot. Ethan Bear had the second assist on the goal.

The Royals took the two-goal lead back at the seven-minute mark of the third when Trent Lofthouse scored. Fisher and Kolton Dixon had the assists.

Delnov completed the hat trick at 10:15 of the third with an unassisted power-play goal. Delnov knocked down a Victoria clearing attempt in the high slot. He got a shot off and then got his own rebound and beat Vollrath.

Barzal banged in a loose puck at the left post at 17:28 of the third just as a five-on-three power play ended to tie the game 5-5. Honey and Elliot had the assists on the tying goal.

Victoria outshot Seattle 15-14 in the third period and led 53-33 in shots after regulation.

The Royals outshot the T-Birds 3-1 in overtime and 56-35 in the game. Vollrath made 30 saves on 35 shots in the loss.
