Flames Affiliate Alaska Aces take home the ECHL Kelly Cup
Winning hasn’t been a predominant theme within the Calgary Flames organization over the last number of years and after five consecutive seasons without playoff hockey, fans have been grasping for something to hang their hats on. While it may not be success at the NHL level, the Flames ECHL affiliate the Alaska Aces, managed to take home the Kelly Cup as the league champs for 2013-14.

Edmonton - June 18, 2014 - Winning hasn’t been a predominant theme within the Calgary Flames organization over the last number of years and after five consecutive seasons without playoff hockey, fans have been grasping for something to hang their hats on.

In the midst of a major shake up with their American Hockey League affiliate formerly known as the Abbotsford Heat and now residing in Adirondack, New York for the foreseeable future, this organization has been struggling to prove to their fans that the franchise is finally starting to head in the right direction..

The Flames ECHL affiliate the Alaska Aces, who Calgary recently adopted in the summer of 2013, had a stellar 2013-2014 campaign finishing a top of the ECHL standings and proceeded to outlast the Cincinnati Cyclones in six games to take home the Kelly Cup as ECHL champs.

Four prospects had the chance to gain some precious playoff experience during the Aces’ championship run, John Ramage (4th round 2010), Turner Elson (2011 free agent signing), James Martin (2011 free agent signing), Olivier Roy (came via trade from Edmonton), and all made solid contributions during the post-season.

Roy and Martin unfortunately had to miss a large portion of the playoffs do to injury; however the former Oiler draftee was an incredible 6-1 in the playoffs before falling to injury. Ramage tallied 13 points in 20 games with most of those coming via the power play. Elson was a monster down the stretch tallying five of his eleven points during the championship series.

I fully understand this is not a “stop the presses” kind of story for the City of Calgary and their loyal fans, however it is a beneficial stepping stone for these young players who should eventually help the Calgary Flames sometime in the not too distant future.
