Flames: Could Phaneuf end up back in Calgary?
Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving and his brain trust will be working meticulously over the coming weeks, putting the finishing touches on their draft list while also trying to build a list of names who they may pursue via trade or free agency. There is no question Brian Burke will have his fingerprints all over any decision, making the chances of the club pursuing Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf a real possibility.

Edmonton - June 10, 2014 - With the Los Angeles Kings throwing daggers through the hearts of the New York Rangers in two devastating overtime losses to start the Stanly Cup Final and making it three for three on Monday evening thanks to a 3-0 victory in Game Three, it appears as though Lord Stanley’s mug will be heading back to la-la land in short order.

While some may be feeling a little “hockeyed-out” there is sense of anticipation in the remaining twenty-eight NHL cities, as the Entry Draft is just under three weeks away with the annual tradition of Free Agent Frenzy also right around the corner.

Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving and his brain trust will be working meticulously over the coming weeks, putting the finishing touches on their draft list while also trying to build a list of names who they may pursue via trade or free agency.

There is no question President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke will be looking to his newly appointed general manager to upgrade the overall roster but the primary focus will be on upgrading the club's lack of depth along the blueline.

Even with the emergence of TJ Brodie and the addition of Ladislav Smid from their rivals to the north, the Flames defensive core sorely lacks actual NHL depth and experience.

All signs point to veteran defensemen Dennis Wideman leaving the Stampede City this summer, whether its via trade or buyout. The thirty-one year old rearguard is coming off what was just a dreadful year by his standards, posting a career low in points with 21 and missing the last 19 games of the 2013-2014 season with an upper body injury.

His departure would leave an even larger hole on their backend and with no immediate help coming from the farm, Calgary is going to have to go shopping in order to fill it. One name that has to be near the top of their wish list is former Flame and current Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

Word across Leaf Nation is that general manager Dave Nonis is quietly shopping his captain around the National Hockey League, gauging interest in the twenty-nine year old. You would have to think Nonis has already had a handful of conversations with Burke about Dion.

For the surprising amount of heat Phaneuf has taken in T.O. he is still considered a top two defenseman in the league. Bringing the veteran blueliner back to town and pairing him up with Mark Giordano would solidify the Flames top pairing and would allow the coaching staff to limit the overall minutes for a kid like Brodie.

Acquiring the talents of Phaneuf would not come cheap and he just recently signed a 7 year, $49 million extension. Not an easy pill to swallow for any team but with the salary cap on the rise and the Flames currently scratching just to reach the cap floor, they most certainly could make an aggressive play for the Edmonton native.

The rumored asking price is a 1st round draft pick, an NHL caliber defenseman and a young prospect in return for Phaneuf, which are assets Calgary does have. However, does a “rebuilding” franchise really want to part with what could turn out to be a possible blue chip prospect with the fourth overall pick at the draft?

Another intriguing question, could the two sides even make a reunion work? Word spread around the league after his departure about his poor attitude and with such an inexperienced group currently in place, would adding a guy with his track record make sense?

While he many no longer be the Calgary Flames GM, Brian Burke is still the guy in charge and with the history being what it is with Dion Phanuef, a potential move involving the former captain returning to his old stomping grounds should surprise no one.
