Oil Kings poorly execute original ideas with new jerseys
The WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings used their home opener as an oppourtunity to unveil their new alternate sweater to fans. “Alternate” is definitely the best way to describe the new green uniform. For the record, the Oil Kings defeated the Calgary Hitmen 7-3. Edmonton removed any trace of their usual red, blue, and white colour scheme.

Toronto - September 22, 2013 - The WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings used their home opener as an oppourtunity to unveil their new alternate sweater to fans. “Alternate” is definitely the best way to describe the new green uniform. For the record, the Oil Kings defeated the Calgary Hitmen 7-3.

Edmonton removed any trace of their usual red, blue, and white colour scheme. Instead they went with black, grey, and neon green. The jersey is the same template that is used by the Anaheim Ducks for their 3rd jersey. The Oil Kings have obviously changed the colours and have created a couple of new logos.

The primary logo is a stern looking king wearing his crown. There is a big black area coming from his sideburns with a dash of grey in it. That is the confusing part of the logo for me. Is that supposed to be the king’s salt and pepper hair? If so, why is it defying gravity and swooping upwards in the back? I like the face and crown, but the rest needed to be re-done, in my opinion.

The new secondary shoulder patch is the team’s acronym, EOK, topped with the king’s crown. Unfortunately, the crown sits a little low on the acronym and to this writer it appears as EUK. That’s the sound one makes when they eat something they don’t like. A simple restructuring of the elements in the secondary logo would be a big improvement.

It is not the way I like jersey designs to go, but I can not fault the Oil Kings for trying to do something different with the new colour scheme. Where I do find fault is with the execution of the logos. While they do have elements that have potential to be solid, they have been poorly executed and arranged. The other fault I find is with the jersey template. Edmonton went strongly with a new and alternative look, but then just used an already existing jersey design. I give them credit for originality, but then take them back because of poor execution of those ideas.

My rating: 6/10
