Detroit - August 1, 2013 - The Detroit Red Wings will honor former defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom by retiring his No. 5 before their game March 6, 2014, against the Colorado Avalanche.

Lidstrom retired following the 2011-12 season after having played 1,564 games, all as a member of the Red Wings, the team that selected him in the third round (No. 53) of the 1989 NHL Draft.

He debuted with the Red Wings during the 1991-92 season and proceeded to help the team win four Stanley Cups (1997, 1998, 2002, 2008) while becoming one of the League's dominant forces on the blue line. Lidstrom won the Norris Trophy seven times and was plus-450 for his career, 10th all-time.

Lidstrom is fifth all-time among players who skated with a single team, and second on Detroit's all-time list behind Gordie Howe. He also contributed 264 goals and 878 points during the regular season, and his 1,142 points are the fourth-most in franchise history.

In addition, Lidstrom became the first European to captain his team to a Stanley Cup in 2008, inheriting the role in Detroit after Steve Yzerman retired.
