The Toronto Maple Leafs started a three game road trip in Calgary Friday night and got beat by a score of 6-3. This one was over in the first period. All Calgary did was score four goals, including not one, but two short handed goals. On the bright side, the lone Leafs’ goal of the period was scored by Richard Panik on a power play. Calgary’s top line of Sean Monahan, Jiri Hudler, and Johnny Gaudreau combined for nine points in the game, and to no one’s surprise were named the three stars of the game.
Windsor - March 14, 2015 - It would be easy to sit here this morning and write about how miserable the Leafs season has been. Too easy. Shooting fish in a barrel easy.
So I’m going to try not to.

All Calgary did was score four goals, including not one, but two short handed goals. On the bright side, the lone Leafs’ goal of the period was scored by Richard Panik on a power play. Calgary’s top line of Sean Monahan, Jiri Hudler, and Johnny Gaudreau combined for nine points in the game, and to no one’s surprise were named the three stars of the game. In their last six games this line has been virtually unstoppable, as they have accounted for thirty points in that stretch.
Pity James Reimer, who got the start and took the loss, his fifteenth in twenty two games. At the other end, Jonas Hiller allowed three goals on twenty eight shots.
The Leafs did win the third period, and that’s something to grasp. These days, you take what positives you can. David Booth scored his second of the game, assisted by Jake Gardiner and Dion Phaneuf. It was the second assist of the game for Gardiner. Another positive of sorts. As for the Leafs top guns, they fizzled again. This season can’t be over soon enough for Kessel, Bozak JVR and Lupul. The four combined for a plus/minus of -9.
Up next is a Saturday night game in Vancouver followed by a Monday night contest in Edmonton. Let’s hope for a better showing in those two games.
