Maple Leafs: So that is what a win feels like

Windsor - February 22, 2015 - Ah….so that’s what a win feels like. Feels pretty good.

Saturday night, at the Air Canada Centre the Toronto Maple Leafs played host to the Winnipeg Jets, and played a pretty decent game before another sold out crowd. James van Riemsdyk sent everyone home happy when he scored in overtime to give the Leafs a much needed win.

If you’re a hockey fan, and especially a Leafs fan, you know that the Buds have been mired in one of the worst seasons in their history. You also know that Leafs management has approved a tear down and rebuild. What we don’t know, is who will stay and who will go? With the NHL trade deadline coming a week from Monday, it is expected that the team will have a different look when they head to Florida next week for games with the Panthers and Lightning. It has been widely speculated that Daniel Winnik will be the next player traded, but he will likely not be the only one exchanging a sweater before March 2nd. There really aren’t any untouchables on this team, with the possible exception of Morgan Reilly, who seems to get better every game. It was Reilly who started the play that lead to JVR’s game winner. Reilly sent a nifty breakout pass to new (and soon to be former) Leaf Ollie Jokinen, who passed the puck to JVR for the winning tally.

Leo Komarov gave the Leafs their only lead of the game before overtime when he blasted a shot past Winnipeg netminder Michael Hutchinson for a short handed goal at 12:57 of the first. Winnipeg went up 2-1 before Daniel Winnik tied the score at 2-2 at 15:07 of the second. Michael Frolik put the Jets ahead again with a goal in the last minute of the period, and the Jets skated off with a 3-2 lead after two. Nazem Kadri scored in the third, tying the game and setting the stage for JVR’s overtime heroics.

Random Game Notes

Prior to the game, the Leafs honoured former greats George Armstrong and Syl Apps by announcing that they will be the next players to be added to Legends Row outside the ACC. Armstrong and Syl Apps Jr. were on hand for the festivities. Also in attendance were several former Leafs, including Red Kelly, Rick Vaive, Ron Ellis, Dave Ellett, Darcy Tucker and Wendel Clark.

With the return of Joffrey Lupul, Brandon Kozun sat this one out as a healthy scratch.

Shots on goal were almost dead even, with the Leafs holding a 34-33 edge.

Three stars of the game were James van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri, and Daniel Winnik.

Next up is a home game against the Flyers on Thursday, then visits to Montreal on Saturday and Washington on Sunday.

Who will be making the trip to Florida? Stay tuned.

TC out.
