Edmonton - November 4, 2015 - Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid is expected to have surgery Wednesday to repair a broken left clavicle sustained Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers, general manager Peter Chiarelli said. He did not have a timetable for how long McDavid would be out but said it would be months.

"He's a strong kid, mentally and physically. He's still developing and he's going to come back stronger," Chiarelli said.

McDavid was injured with 1:44 remaining in the second period of the Oilers' 4-2 win at Rexall Place. He carried the puck down the left wing, fired a shot on goal, was checked, fell to the ice and slid into the end boards. He was being defended by Flyers defensemen Brandon Manning and Michael Del Zotto.

He was able to skate off the ice on his own but did not return to the game for the final period.

McDavid, 18, had five goals and seven assists in 13 games for Edmonton this season. On Monday, he was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for October.

"It's tough, the kid was playing real well for us," Oilers forward Matt Hendricks said. "I'm not sure what the exact details are of the injury. I'm glad he was able to get off on his own two feet. He's in a little bit of pain. It's hard for guys to see a teammate go down like that, but at the same time, we had other guys step up."
