Sarnia Sting scout brings Leafs Nation to Stoney Point
By Cynthia Burk
Tristan Burk is surrounded by his classmates at Our Lady of the Annunciation in Stoney Point. Jim Rauth, a scout with the OHL's Sarnia Sting surprised Tristan with an autographed photo from Windsor native and Toronto Maple Leaf, Matt Martin. We want to thank Jim for his thoughtfulness and for bringing a smile to our faces and hearts with his wonderful surprise.
Stoney Point - January 18, 2018 - My morning found my heart racing with a bit of fear then minutes later tears streaming down my face touched by the kindness of a stranger, and it's only Wednesday. I got a call from Tristan's school principal which automatically sends alarm bells off for us because we think Tristan is having a seizure. It wasn't the case, Mr. Favero asked if I could make time to come to the school for another reason. He tried to get a hold of Chris before me, but he missed the call and saw it was the school so panic struck him, then I called which stressed him further - until I said all was okay. This is the reality of our world, when our cells ring and Tristan isn't with us, our heart rates increase and we are in "go" mode.
I arrived at the school to be introduced to Jim Rauth, who is with the Ontario Hockey League as a scout for the Sarnia Sting. He read how SCN8A and Autism impacts Tristan's life and was touched by it. Then he initiated a quest to get an autographed photo from Windsor native and Toronto Maple Leaf, Matt Martin. After some time, with the autographed photo in-hand, he brought it to Stoney Point and surprised Tristan at school.
Of course the tears came as Jim recounted what brought him to Our Lady of the Annunciation. I was touched by his kindness and recognized that this gentleman read a story about our son and went out of his way to get this photo autographed and into Tristan's hands. Tristan is a Leafs fan so it will be awesome hung in his room where Daddy and Papa can enjoy it also. Unbeknownst to Jim, it is a fantastic birthday surprise for Tristan who turned eight the day before.
We want to thank Jim for his thoughtfulness and for bringing a smile to our faces and hearts with his wonderful surprise. Lastly, to Matt Martin who took the time to put pen to photo, this small gesture that you do time and time again makes an impactful difference to the young ones who idiolize you.
