Penguins End Slide With 5-1 Win Over IceCaps

Wilkes-Barre - January 21, 2015 -

t was the WBS Penguins taking on the St.John's IceCaps at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza tonight, the first home game since 1-10-15 and the last one until 1-31-15 when the Pens take on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

St. Johns gets the first chance on the power play tonight as Boak got whistled for roughing after a scrum in the Penguins zone. WBS kills it off in nice fashion gaining a little momentum, then shortly after the PK Tom Kostopoulos finds the puck on his stick off the faceoff and snaps on past Connor Helebuyck making it one to none WBS.

Bobby Farnham just back from Pittsburgh made his presence known as he finds a puck comes in all alone on Connor Helebuyck and goes top shelf on him making it two to nothing WBS early on in the first period. WBS did a nice job on the PK during the first period killing off both of the IceCaps chances keeping the two goal lead WBS had.

Second period gets under way and the WBS Penguins pick up where they left off, Nick Drazenovic centers a pass to Conor Sheary who went top shelf on Helebuyck making it three to nothing Penguins just 4:20 in.

St. John's would score late in the second a short handed bid by Nicolas Elerby makes it a 3 - 1 game and that is where it would end for the second period st. John's gaining a little momentum heading off for the intermission.

The IceCaps momentum was short lived as Conor Sheary tallied his second of the game putting him on HTA  and putting the Penguins up 4-1 over the IceCaps. It wasn't in the cards for Sheary to get hit Hat Trick tonight but it was in the cards for the WBS Penguins to break the winless streak.

Later in the third the Pens would go on the PK again as Scott Wilson would get called for holding the stick giving the IceCaps a chance to close the gap just a little, but the WBS PK held as it did all night. Wilson would come out of the box and end up netting the Penguins last goal of the night, an empty netter to make the final score tonight the WBS Penguins 5 the St. John's IceCaps 1. Matt Murray doing a great job in net for WBS once again stoping 25 out of the 26 shots he faced helping his team to the victory.
