Buffalo - January 12, 2015 - As if the season weren’t already tough enough, they just got a little tougher: the team announced on Sunday that Cody McCormick will be out a while with a blood clot in his leg. From the team’s Twitter:

According to Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald, the clot is in McCormick’s calf muscle.

“I’m quite sure it’s somewhat serious if he’s still in the hospital,” said Ted Nolan. “I know he took a puck in the foot, he was limping around for a couple days, maybe it happened from there. I’m not 100 percent sure.”

Blood clots have become a scary issue for a select few in the NHL these days. Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timmonen has missed the entire season due to blood clots in his right leg and lungs, leaving many to wonder if his NHL career is over.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun missed the entire 2013-14 season with blood clots and has since retired.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis is expected to miss six months after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs back in November.

We’re still unclear just how serious this is for McCormick or if it will keep him out of action in the same capacity as the players listed above. More on this as it develops.
