Buffalo - November 17, 2014 - Following every Sabres game, we’ll be taking a little look at the previous night’s action with a little segment called “good, bad and ugly”. Expect a loooooooot of ugly.
Let’s get on with it about the 6-2(!!) win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Good
A goal for you! And a goal for you! And how about one for you?
The Sabres exploded for six goals on the night against their hated rivals from north of the border. Familiar faces Tyler Ennis, Drew Stafford and Zemgus Girgensons – AKA the only guys who ever score – scored, but the team also got goals from Matt Moulson and Tyler Myers, too.
I had a comment about how this is five or six games worth of goals, but it’s less “ha ha” funny and more “sad reality” funny than anything else. But you know what? Beating the Leafs is never not awesome and if they lose the next five games by a combined score of 20-0, I won’t care.
Beating the Leafs and making them panic about just how bad they might be is as awesome as it gets when your team is super terrible like the Sabres are.
The Bad
Eh, I would normally take this spot to complain about all the shots – and there were still 34 on the night for Michal Neuvirth to face – but who cares at this point? Allowing 34 shots is a good night for the Sabres, who have been known to allow 50+ shots on a few occasions.
This is a bad team that just crushed their rival and the team I hate the most. How mad can I really be here?
The Ugly
For once, this isn’t about the Sabres. No, the team having to ask itself a lot of questions resides on the other bench for once. The Leafs seemingly can’t get going in the right direction for more than a short burst at a time.
Win a few, lose a few, win a few, drop an embarrassing decision to the worst team in the league by far. Their goaltending has been a mess and James Reimer didn’t do much to help remedy that situation, though the hideous numbers aren’t entirely his fault. Still, allowing a half dozen to the worst team in the league, one that scores a shade under two a night, is an ugly thing to have on your resume.
