Good, Bad and Ugly; Sabres vs St. Louis Blues

St. Louis - November 12, 2014 - Following every Sabres game, we’ll be taking a little look at the previous night’s action with a little segment called “good, bad and ugly”. Expect a loooooooot of ugly.

Let’s get on with it about the ugly 6-1 loss to the Blues.

The Good

It was a pleasure watching Vladimir Tarasenko work. The Blues clearly got a steal when they took him 16th overall in 2010. He’s really come into his own this season, showing that explosive ability that made him a “boom or bust” pick.

Last night, he wasn’t scoring the highlight reel goals, but he certainly was involved in them. The red-hot line featuring Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz and Jori Lehtera was at it again last night, combining for three goals and five assists as they decimated the god-awful Sabres. Lehtera had a natural hat trick, but his first of the night towards the end of the first would have been enough to end it against the Sabres on most nights.

On the year, Tarasenko is sitting fourth in the NHL in points with 19 and fifth in goals with nine. He’s playing like a house of fire right now and the Blues haven’t had a player this electrifying in quite a while.

The Bad

Once again, the offense is totally non-existent unless it’s coming from Tyler Ennis, Drew Stafford or Zemgus Girgensons. Why can NO ONE on this team score other than those three? How is no one complaining about the system in place? It’s clear that these guys aren’t being put in a position to even generate shots, let alone scoring chances. How can anyone score when they can’t even get pucks to the net?

I understand the talent isn’t there. Really, I do. But how is this team going to be much better next year again? It’ll be the same coaches with the same system and generally the same talent. Do we really expect that adding McDavid/Eichel, Larsson, Grigorenko and Reinhart full-time is going to change anything in the short-term? Ye gods.

The Ugly

I’m trying so hard to not be upset with results like this. After all, it’s what we the fans wanted, isn’t it? We wanted to be as bad as possible to ensure that Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel would be wearing the blue and gold come June.

But man, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to watch this team right now. They aren’t even in the same league and that’s the most frustrating part. Every game is a part of a running joke, it seems, and the joke is going to last until April.
