Buffalo - August 1, 2014 - That didn’t take long at all, did it? Just a few days after Bryan Trottier was reported to be joining Ted Nolan’s staff behind the bench of the Buffalo Sabres, two more names have been added to the staff.

The first is Danny Flynn, the QMJHL Montcon Wildcats’ vice president of hockey operations. Nolan and Flynn have a lengthy history with one another, starting with Flynn assisting Nolan with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds before moving up to coach the OHL club when Nolan left for the NHL. Flynn has also worked with Nolan in Moncton and assisted him in 2006-07, Nolan’s first season on Long Island with the New York Islanders. He has since returned to the Wildcats, winning a championship in 2009-10.

Joining them? Latvian assistant coach Tom Coolen. Coolen has a comprehensive history in the game, jumping around quite a bit throughout the years. He’s had a stop as head coach of Moncton (like Flynn) and has been with Latvia since 2012. He also has stops in Canadian college hockey, Germany, Austria, Italy and Finland.

It’s clear with these two hires that Nolan is bringing in a staff he is not only familiar with, but clearly has trust in. Both Flynn and Coolen have long histories with Nolan, so the staff should at least be working in step with one another from day one. Whether or not that transfers to results on the ice is another thing, but this staff will have the opportunity to play a key part in the futures of much of the young talent in the system.

Latvian Asst. Coach Tom Coolen will join Nolan's coaching staff. Expect #Sabres to announce this week. #QMJHL #lhjmq #Wildcats #Axemen
