Cornwall - June 24, 2013 - Seniors in the City of Cornwall will soon have better access to a local seniors facilitiy thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).

Guy Lauzon, Member of Parliament for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors).

“I am proud to be part of a government that supports our local seniors organizations,” said MP Lauzon. “The New Horizons for Seniors Program continues to help a variety of constituents and organizations in our riding with necessary upgrades and repairs, and better access to programming and healthy active living.”

The Centre Charles-Émile Claude will receive $22,352 for upgrades to their facility. The organization will install an electrical panel and change lighting to support social participation of seniors by continuing existing programs such as painting class, card games, and a reading club.

“We are pleased to receive these funds through the New Horizons for Seniors program,” said Executive Director Linda Newman. “This grant will allow the Centre to initiate Phase 1 of our infrastructure projects and to achieve savings by preserving energy with the installion of new neon lights and a new electrical panel. Without this grant, the Centre could not offer activities and adequate services to the elderly in our community.”

Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded more than 12,200 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. This year, the Government of Canada will provide more than $33 million in funding for approximately 1,750 community projects.

MP Lauzon announced funding earlier this week to the Seaway Valley Community Health Centre through the same program.
