Cornwall - Nov. 9, 2012 - Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell joined his caucus colleagues in signing an open letter and a petition to Dalton McGuinty requesting a return of the Legislative Assembly following the October 15th prorogation.

“Ontario needs urgent reforms to address our spending and jobs crises. While Statistics Canada shows Ontario’s private sector losing 40,000 jobs in October alone, the Liberals shut down the Legislature for their own party’s convenience. Despite claims by members of their caucus that they do not approve of the prorogation, not a single Liberal MPP has stepped up demanding a return of lawmaking business. I am ready to return to Toronto immediately, and I hope Dalton McGuinty will listen to outraged Ontarians at last” - said McDonell.

On October 15, Dalton McGuinty asked the Lieutenant-Governor to prorogue the Legislative Assembly indefinitely before announcing his resignation as Liberal Leader and triggering a leadership race. Only the Premier can ask that the Assembly be reconvened with a minimum 24-hour notice.

MPP Jim McDonell says the sooner, the better, adding: “McGuinty leaves a legacy of kicking the can down the road. This is a final act of procrastination: when Ontario needs solid leadership, he leaves the Government on auto-pilot on course for a $411 billion debt. It is unacceptable.”
