Cornwall - March 16, 2012 - In this week's installment of 30 Second Timeout we take a look at possible candidates for NHL Rookie of the Year. This week’s question was: Who will win the Calder Trophy this year? Colorado's Gabriel Landeskog seems to be the front runner, what do you think? You can vote in our poll below.

Phillip Blancher - As a Buffalo Sabres fan, I would like to see newcomer from Vancouver, Cody Hodgson win, but Colorado Avalanche Forward Gabriel Landeskog is my pick for the Calder. Landeskog is leading his class in shots on goal and plus/minus, is tied for goals and isn't afraid to make shots and big plays.

Liam Carter - At this point in time it is clearly a three horse race between Gabriel Landeskog, Adam Henrique and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. However in my opinion Gabriel Landeskog is the definitive front runner for the Calder Trophy as I feel his play at both ends of the rink is what separates him from the pack. Other factors that effect my decision include the amount of time Nugent-Hopkins has missed with injury, and the situation in which Adam Henrique has found himself in playing alongside Parise and Kovalchuk in New Jersey. In short, I feel that Landeskog has contributed to a larger degree of his team’s success.

Chris Savard - If I had a vote, I would cast it in favour of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins from the Edmonton Oilers. I recognize he missed a chunk of games due to injury but his numbers are still very impressive. Despite missing twenty games, it is very possible that RNH will end up winning the rookie scoring race, as he is only three points behind as of today. Had he stayed healthy, RNH had a shot to put up over 70 points on a team in the bottom third of league standings. The first overall pick has a great career ahead of him and will start it with a Calder Trophy.

Rob Soria - If Ryan Nugent-Hopkins didn’t miss twenty games, this one wouldn’t even be worth discussing. That being said, RNH did get hurt and while he is only five points behind New Jersey’s Adam Henrique in the Rookie Scoring Race, I don’t see the Devils forward as his main competition. That would be young Gabriel Landeskog. The talented Swede is second in rookie scoring, while playing in all situations and being a physical presence on a nightly basis. He also has a ridiculous +20 rating, which is by far and away the best rating for any Avalanche player.
