School and Principal handle bullying situation in top notch fashion
There has been a lot of justified concern about "bullying" especially in the schools and "social networks". Generally, the schools have been taking heat about it but I picked up a story recently about a school and especially a Principal who handled it so well it bears repeating.

Cornwall - Mar. 7, 2012 - There has been a lot of justified concern about "bullying" especially in the schools and "social networks". Generally, the schools have been taking heat about it but I picked up a story recently about a school and especially a Principal who handled it so well it bears repeating.

A grade eight student broke down during a classroom break and when the classroom teacher asked what was wrong the student replied "nothing". Then a second student grabbed the crying students phone and gave it to the teacher "look at this". The teacher took the phone to the Principal right away (on a Friday) - first thing Monday the two parents of the sender and the two parents of the victim were in the office. It goes without saying all four parents were dumbfounded and after an hour or so the two students were called to the office and of course were really surprised to see their parents because they were not told about the plan.

The sender admitted to it (apparently it had been going on for an extended time). After being called out by the parents the sender was required to apologize to the victim and promise to end it, The student was told by the Principal that if it happened again the student would not graduate and go on to high school. When the parents asked how that would work the principal said the student would be suspended for the remainder of grade eight and have to repeat in September.

That was understood and agreed to and all went back to where they were. It is my understanding the parents have taken the phone away from their child and imposed a tight leash.

The mutual friends of the two knew for some time this had been going on are were being forced to pick sides and that now is healing. I think special kudos go to the principal for the speed and professional handling - as well as for the parents to get involved. It warms the heart to know that there are people out there doing good work

The recent trade deadline in the NHL was hyped for weeks in advance, then is on air for 10-12 hours - so much so that I made a conscious decision not to watch but to check in 2-3 times during the day. All you get is a bunch of talking heads trying to prove how well connected they are. I don’t make a lot of good decisions, but this was one.

For medical reasons my curling season is over, but I really want people to be aware just how active the curling club is in this town - in particular the Senior Division. I have curled in a lot of cities in this country and have never heard of a senior draw with 200+ members - two draws a day, five days a week. The clubs I know of had one a week and struggled to keep it alive. The club really encourages "new" curlers and offer instruction in the fall (free) and place these guys on teams to get them going with a new draw and team every five weeks or so. Where else for $285 can you curl two to three games a week all winter and get about five lunches included? So if you are a senior and want some activity, come and check it out.

Ron Wilson gone in Toronto - surprise, surprise. Methods that worked 20 years ago in dealing with the talent simply do not work in this day and age. Ask Ken Hitchcock how much he changed his approach and see the great results in St Louis.

I was going to rant about the robo call thing but that has all been said. I will say this - you will never convince me that some 23 year old kid came up with this plan on his own. I doubt very much that Harper himself knew about it, but somebody fairly senior in the organization must have. With the Reform parties feeling that the media-judiciary, government workers are all against them and every day is election day - you start to think maybe they are stupid enough to try that. And we wonder why voter turn out is so low!!

Jeez, I must have led a sheltered life because I just learned this week that there is a hunting season for snapping turtles and David Suzuki is worried about it. I really should broaden my horizons.

Keep Smiling
